Ferret Legging
Ferret care is needed in the sport ferret legging. Ferret legging is also called as “put’em down” is a kind of sport popular in Yorkshire for coal miners. It is a sport that tests the endurance in which ferrets are trapped in pants worn by participants of the competition. Contestants must be male. The contestant of the competition must put the live ferrets inside their trousers. The last to release the animal would be the one declared winner. The one who holds the world record of five hours and twenty six minutes is a retired miner in Barnsley named Reg Mellor in 1981.
Ferret care legging has been described as a “dying sport”. This sport is dangerous to new ferrets. It was originated during the time when only wealthy families in England were allowed to keep animals that are used for hunting. The National ferret legging event is held in Richmond Virginia yearly since 2003.

Two ferrets are used in this competition. The contestant must tie their trousers in their ankles and then place the two ferrets inside. They should fasten their belts to prevent the ferret from escaping. Competitors must stand in front of the judges. As a rule, competitors should not be drunk or drugged or even ferretsbe sedated. Competitors should not wear underwear so that ferrets are allowed to have a free access. Ferrets must have a full set of teeth. The longest to last will be the one declared winner.

A worker Marlene Blackburn of the Ferret Rescue League ensures that no ferrets are harmed in the sport. This league sees to it that proper ferret care is given. No contestant has been by bitten by ferrets although some have few scratches. Reg Mellor however commented that at their very worst “ferrets can be cannibals; they live only to kill, they can at your eyes out to get at your brain”. Rick Reilly of ESPN an American sportswriter tried ferret legging as part of his quest in his book to be published in 2010 entitled “The Worlds Dumbest Sport”.
